The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that 110 million Nigerians have been successfully enrolled in the National Identification Numbers (NIN) database.
This milestone was revealed by the Director General of the Commission, Mrs. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during the 6th National Identity Day celebration held in Abuja on Monday, September 16.
Coker-Odusote noted that the commission is committed to increasing enrolment and is working to ensure that more Nigerians are captured in the shortest possible time.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized the importance of data protection with the growing number of Nigerians captured by NIMC. He highlighted that effective management of the nation’s identity data is now crucial.
The National Identity Day was established by the Federal Government in 2020, under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, with the goal of encouraging enrolment into the national identity database. September 16 was chosen as the official day to raise awareness and promote the importance of digital identity.
