The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially launched an investigation into the troubling incident at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya, where the Nigerian Super Eagles and their technical team were detained for over 14 hours.
In a statement released on Monday, October 14, CAF’s communications department vowed to take action against those responsible, stating that the issue had been referred to its disciplinary board.
The statement reads: “The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.”
CAF added that the disciplinary board would investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure those found in violation of CAF Statutes and Regulations are held accountable.
This comes after the Super Eagles, who were in Libya for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, were held at the airport for hours before being granted clearance to exit the country. The team finally arrived back in Nigeria late today.
