Delta Workers To Get New Minimum Wage October, Says Delta NLC Chairman Ofobruku

The Delta State Chairnman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Chief Goodluck Ofobruku has said workers in the state should be expecting the New Minimum Wage in their October 2024 salaries.

Chief Ofobruku disclosed this during an interview with newsmen in Asaba, said Labour Union and the State Government have looked at the staff strength and financial implementation which are adequate and comfortable for the state to pay the new minimum wage after Negotiation and several meetings

Chief Goodluck Ofobruku added further that the Union has resolved with the state government that implementation should start with the October 2024 salaries and workers in the state should expect to get the new minimum wage.

According to his statement; “the staff strength in the state is adequate, and we also look at the finances of the state, they are comfortable, they can pay”

He continued; “we have resolved that implementation should start with the October 2024 salaries, so, workers should expect to get the new minimum wage in their October 2024 salaries”

The Delta State labour leader, however, expressed confidence that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will keep to his promises that anytime he (the Governor) received the enabling circular from the Federal Government he was going to implement it for workers in the state, which he has done.

Ofobrukun also said the implementation of the new minimum wage will help workers tackle some of their needs, and I appreciate the Governor for his kind gesture.

On alleged salary reduction of workers in the state, the labour leader explained that salaries of workers are always going up but if there are any deductions, it means they are statutory deductions, like; contributory pension, contributory health insurance, taxes, and national housing fund.

Chief Ofobruku noted Nigeria Labour Congress is to ensure that workers get their entitlement and the Government has granted that workers in the state get their entitlement with effect from October 2024 salaries.

Chief Goodluck Ofobruku also disclosed that the New Minimum wage Act is for all employers of labour in the country, saying with the adoption for implementation in Delta state it means that all employers of labour in the state will have to pay their workers.

He revealed that the labour union at the state level has constituted a team, saying the moment those in the public sector gets their money, the task-force will swing into action to ensure that they in the private sector implement theirs.

He noted that anywhere the private sector that did not implement the new minimum wage, that organization will be declared a TRADE DISPUTE and NLC will take necessary action, but for now, let the public sector get their first.
