Nov 6, 2024

President Bola Tinubu has officially promoted the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Olufemi Oluyede, to the rank of Lieutenant General. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, November 5, at the President’s Office, where Tinubu praised the Nigerian military for its dedication to national security and resilience in the face of challenges.

During the decoration ceremony, Tinubu expressed his appreciation for Oluyede’s service, stating, “It is both an honour and a privilege to decorate you today. This recognition reflects your commitment and service to the Nigerian military, which speaks volumes through your exemplary record.” The President emphasized the government’s dedication to supporting the military, adding that “progress is being made” in addressing security issues, particularly terrorism and banditry. He attributed recent security successes to the “synergy” within the armed forces and encouraged military leaders to sustain this unity for the nation’s stability.

Lt. Gen. Oluyede, who now holds the third-highest rank in the Army, expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reiterated his commitment to supporting the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, currently on medical leave. Oluyede’s military career includes participation in several key operations, such as the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) mission in Liberia, Operation Harmony IV in Bakassi, and Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East.

This promotion follows Oluyede’s recent appointment as Acting Army Chief, filling in for Lt. Gen. Lagbaja. The President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, also highlighted Tinubu’s assurance to continue listening to the military’s advice to maintain peace and prosperity in the country.
