The Onishe of Ubulu Uku, Chief Emma Ejiofor has issued a resolute warning to individuals and groups engaging in illegal land-grabbing activities within Ubulu-Uku farmlands.
The warning follows in a recent alleged involvement of the Obi of Ogwashi Uku, particularly concerning the Aniagbala farmland.
Chief Ejiofor described these actions as a blatant disregard for the traditional land ownership practices upheld by the Ubulu Uku community for generations.
He explained, Aniagbala, a prominent quarter within Ubulu Uku, holds farmland that has been cultivated and maintained by specific families and kindreds for over 30 years. Adding, any claims contrary to this historical connection are deemed illegitimate.
According to Chief Ejiofor, “the supposed legal claims put forth by the Obi of Ogwashi Uku are baseless and will be robustly contested”.
He condemned attempts by external parties to appropriate land with no historical or familial ties to the area, labeling such actions as “unjust” and an affront to the community’s long-standing traditions.
He said; “These land-grabbing activities are a direct attack on our cultural heritage, which we will not tolerate,”
Chief Ejiofor said. “Let it be known that Ubulu Uku has mechanisms to address these transgressions. Anyone attempting to claim land illegally will face the full force of the law and the collective response of the Ubulu Uku community.”
While Chief Ejiofor’s warning was particularly aimed at the Obi of Ogwashi Uku, he extended it as a general caution to all potential land grabbers. He emphasized that the community stands united in defending its lands and traditions.
“This is not just a warning to the Obi of Ogwashi Uku but to all who might entertain thoughts of encroaching on Ubulu Uku farmlands. Injustice to one is injustice to all, and our response will reflect that collective resolve,” Chief Ejiofor declared.
The Onishe also criticized the underlying motivations for land-grabbing, noting that many of these disputes stem from title struggles that have no legitimate basis. He urged those involved to abandon such schemes and respect the community’s land rights.
Chief Ejiofor’s statement underscores the determination of Ubulu Uku to uphold its heritage, protect its farmlands, and preserve the integrity of its cultural and traditional land ownership systems.
