Dec 29, 2024

In a dramatic turn of events, the Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Eghe Ogbemudia, and her deputy, Frank Osawe, have been impeached by the legislative arm of the council. The decision, announced on Friday, comes amidst allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriation.

The council’s legislators also suspended key principal officers, including the Majority Leader, Hon. Bosede Omokaro, the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Iwinosa Enabulele, and the Chief Whip, Hon. Elliot Inneh Enni.

The impeachment, rooted in four serious charges, cited unlawful withholding of statutory allowances owed to a principal officer and three council members, as well as budget padding. The motion was spearheaded by Hon. Nosakhare Isiegbuwa and seconded by Hon. Stella Ogida Osagioduwa, garnering signatures from four legislators.

According to council insiders, the suspended principal officers were accused of failing to ensure the timely payment of salaries, resulting in a two-month delay for councilors. Additionally, they were criticized for neglecting their oversight responsibilities and lack of cooperation with the council leadership.

Five council members voted in favor of the suspension, while one member was absent during the session. Following the suspension, Hon. Kelvin Eguakun was elected as the new Leader of the legislative arm.

During the impeachment proceedings, Isiegbuwa presented the findings of a seven-member panel tasked with investigating the allegations. The panel’s report found Ogbemudia and Osawe guilty on all counts, leading to a unanimous voice vote that sealed their removal from office.
