The Delta State Government has given assurance of regulating the high cost of rent in collaboration with the State House of Assembly.
The commissioner for housing, Hon. Godknows Angeles disclosed this in Asaba, said the state government is equally worried at the high cost of rent in what they, the house agent, described as “total package”.
He said, he had received a petition from a civil society group seeking to set up a taskforce to regulate house agents’ activities.
He revealed that a copy of the petition was also forwarded to Mr. Speaker of the state House of Assembly and the Commissioner of Police
He maintained that the state government is supporting the move group provided it was accordance with law while waiting for Governor’s final decision.
He said, “a taskforce committee has already been set up to monitor the activities of the house agents, and a newly mandated real estate association is being formed to regulate them”
He continued; “we have given an order to the Association of Real Estate Agents, and they have inaugurated their chairman in Warri to monitor all agents.
“The house agent cannot just wake up and increase rent prices, once they are registered, all agents will have to follow specific guidelines, and those who overcharge tenants will face arrest”
