As part of her social responsibility, the 8th edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Principals’ Cup football competition for secondary schools will kick off on September 18th in Asaba, with a promise of excitement.
Addressing journalists at a briefing on Tuesday, the representative of Zenith Bank, Dr. Ifeanyi Atama, said the aim of the Principals Cup is to develop sport within the Delta State community.
Atama commended the state Governor for his exemplary leadership in fostering an environment conducive to sports and educational excellence.
He maintained that Zenith Bank’s partnership with the Delta State Government in facilitating the Principals’ Cup underscores the bank’s dedication to leveraging sports for socio-economic empowerment.
Dr. Atama also noted that the competition serves as a platform for unearthing and cultivating the athletic potential of our youth, who embody the society’s aspirations and pivotal to developing well-rounded individuals who can navigate and contribute to an increasingly complex world.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewo, explained that the Zenith Bank Principals Cup competition is a tool for youth empowerment, discipline, teamwork, and character building,”
The commissioner added that the sport also shows commitment to education beyond the classroom, helping to raise well-rounded individuals with life skills that prepare them for the future.”
While commending Zenith Bank for sponsoring the tournament for eight years without government support.
“These stories prove that with the right opportunities, our students can compete and excel anywhere in the world, she said.
Also speaking, the chief responsibility officer, Hideaplus Nigeria, Mr. Tony Pemu gave an overview of the competition that has lasted over seven years in a stretch.
According to him, “the Principals’ Cup has grown into one of the most anticipated grassroots sports initiatives in Delta State,” he said. “From just a vision in 2017, it has now produced champions year after year, with schools across the state etching their names in history.”
Pemu revealed that the 2025 edition will begin on September 18 and run until the finals on October 16, 2025.
“This year’s tournament comes with much fanfare and upgraded quality in terms of match officiating, discipline, and professionalism,” he said. “The aim is not just to play football but to discover and nurture hidden talents who can compete internationally.”
