The new Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, has vowed to go tough on criminality to prevent crime and unrest across the state.
The new commissioner of police made the vow at his inaugural speech at the state police command while briefing journalists as the 24th commissioner of police in the state.
He said he was aware of the responsibility that comes with the position; hence, the safety of lives and property in Delta State remains the topmost priority, and he was committed to doing everything within the law to ensure that residents feel safe in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
He added that Delta State, being one of the country’s economic hubs, plays a vital role in commerce, industry, and national development, and it important that the state has a strong and effective security architecture to support its growth and stability.
He, however, commended the efforts of his predecessor, CP Aina Adesola, and the management team, whose work has helped to strengthen the command.
He also emphasized that the Inspector-General of Police has issued a clear directive on the need to streamline tactical operations across commands, saying the directive was both timely and necessary.
“The objective is clear: to eliminate duplication of duties, enhance accountability, and ensure that all tactical deployments are intelligence-driven and result-oriented.”
“Crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult activities require quick and well-coordinated responses. By properly organizing our tactical teams, we will be able to respond faster and deal with criminal activities more effectively.”
“Let me make it clear that there will be no tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of human rights, and unprofessional conduct of officers, both on and off duty. All officers will be accountable for their actions as they must carry out their duties within the ambit of the law and treat members of the public with respect.”
“Going forward, we will focus on preventing crime, not just reacting to it. The command will increase police presence in communities, strengthen intelligence gathering, and work closely with residents to improve security. Security is a shared responsibility; all have a role to play in this wise. “
“The command appreciates and will continue to work with the State Government, sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, and other stakeholders.”
“To the good people of Delta State, I encourage you to support the police by providing useful, timely, and credible information, as your cooperation is very important in helping the command to keep the state safe. If you see something, say something.”
“To the media, I thank you for your role in informing the public. I look forward to working with you professionally and constructively.”
“To the officers and men of the command, the expectations are clear. Discipline, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law are non-negotiable.”
