PRESS BRIEFING BY THE AKWA IBOM STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, CP JOSEPH O. ERIBO, psc. HELD ON FRIDAY, 18TH OCTOBER, 2024.

Distinguished gentlemen of the press, it is my pleasure to welcome you to this briefing.

This is my second press briefing with you as the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State. Like I said in our maiden briefing, my interaction with the press will be very regular. This media briefing affords us all the opportunity of media/Police partnership of full collaboration enabling an environment of symbiotic relationships between all stakeholders. This briefing afford us the partnership that we desire so that we continue to enjoy a symbiotic relationship between all stakeholders as earlier promised.

We are gathered here today so we share with you some of the achievements we have recorded and appeal that you give us the necessary media coverage.

Within the period under review, the Police in Akwa Ibom State under my supervision has achieved the following;

1.Murder/Cultism: On 16/10/2024, at about 0635hrs, Operatives of the Command were alerted of the presence of a corpse with mark of violence on it by the youth leader. He alleged that the dead body is One Paul Eyo ‘m’ a suspected member of black axe from EyoAbasi, who was given machete cuts on his head leading to his death while One Ekpe ‘m’ from EyoAbasi a suspected member of Vikings cult group was also beheaded. At about 12:15hrs, based on credible intelligence on Abiak Owo Ebughu in Mbo LGA where it was believed the gangsters that killed one Paul Eyo earlier that morning came from, One Mfon Etim Uzoma ‘m’, Robert Effiong Etim ‘m’, Malachi Williams Ubokulo ‘m’, boys to the kingpin were all arrested at a ravine in the village and items recovered are;
i.Two (2) face cap with Vikings insignia,
ii.One (1) LG 14inch tv
iii.One (1) Shovel
iv.One (1) Camp Gas
v.One (1) amplifier
vi.six (6) spring foam
vii.One (1) plastic table
viii.One (1) plastic chair
ix.Four (4) motorcycles
Suspects will be charged to court.

  1. Robbery/recovery of firearm: On the 6/10/2024 at about 0230hrs, Operatives of the Command while on patrol along Calabar/Itu Road saw four men on one bike. On sighting the police, they took to their heels. The Team immediately swung into action, pursued them, and arrested two, one Daniel Patrick ‘m’ from Ibiono Ibom and one Idongsit Ini ‘m’ from Ikot Mbang. On a thorough search of both men (Suspects) one locally made pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from them. On the same date at about 0430hrs, the arrested suspects confessed to the crime of illegal possession of firearms and led the Command’s Operatives to Ikot Obio Oma, Ibiono LGA, where their arms supplier named Elijah Sunday Effiong ‘m’, was arrested and the following items were recovered;

i.Two (2) locally made long guns.
ii.Two (2) live cartridges.
iii.Twelve (12) refilled cartridges.
iv.Four (4) Empty shells to be refilled.
v.One (1) Sack containing gunpowder.
vi.One (1) container of carbide.
The Command is still on the trail to arrest those at large, all suspects will be charged to court accordingly.

  1. STEALING/RECEIVING OF STOLEN PROPERTY: On the 17/10/2024 at about 1400hrs, Operatives of the Command received a distress call from one man (name withheld) that his Jenbei Hiase bus was stolen at Akpa Ube street where he parked it due to a minor fault. The vehicle was traced to a scrap dump at the mechanic village, Afaha Offot, Uyo where the vehicle had been butchered into pieces by the receiver, one Ike Chimieze ‘m’ who is the receiver of the stolen vehicle. He was arrested and he took the Operatives to the premise of one Matthew Chimeze ‘m’ who stole the vehicle and sold the vehicle to him. Investigation is ongoing, both suspects will be charged to court.
  2. ARREST OF ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECTS AND RECOVERY OF LOCALLY MADE PISTOL:
    On the 17/10/2024 at about 0500hrs Operatives of the Command while on patrol along Atiku Abubakar Avenue flyover leading to Idoro Road noticed a parked tricycle. On sighting the Police, they fled in their vehicle, the team pursued them and the residents within that Ikot Obio Enang helped to block the two suspects and the police arrested one Prince Martin Odo ‘m’ and Humble Ezekiel Odo ‘M’,. One of the suspects threw away a locally made double barrel pistol into the nearby bush, the police recovered the double barrel pistol, conducted a thorough search on their tricycle and recovered a bag containing the following items;
    I. A Big cutter
    II. A Small cutter
    III. One plier
    IV. Two Spanners
    Investigation in progress to arrest others at large. Suspects will be charged to court.
  3. ARREST OF ARMED ROBBERS/ RECOVERY OF A STOLEN MOTORCYLE: On the 18/10/2024 at about 0130hrs, two Suspected armed robbers namely Tony Ntuen Uso ‘m’ and Iniobong Effiong Johnny ‘m’ of Mbierebe Obio, Ibesikpo LGA, were arrested after they snatched one Qlink motorcycle at gun point along Obio Ndobo village in Uruan LGA which belongs to one Emmanuel Edem Okon, effort is ongoing to arrest the other fleeing members.

Gentlemen of the press, I want to respectfully use this medium to ask you to alert the whole of Akwa Ibom state that the Commissioner of Police and his management team have put out a red alert on crime through his Area commanders, tactical commanders and DPOs in the State. My duty as a commissioner of police Akwa Ibom state is to bring crime to the bearest minimum. As a critical partner in the fight against crimes, the Police will appreciate any information that will be useful enough to help us tackle crime.
The Police has zero tolerance for crime that is why I am reminding you that if you see something, please say something and Police will do something immediately. My lines and that of the PPRO remain open for accessibility. Thank you for coming and may God bless you all.
