The Delta chairman of the. Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), chief Goodluck Ofobruku has appealed to Delta state government to always consult the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) before carryout any recruitment for teachers in the state for better assessment and quality teachers.

The state labour chairman, made the call at Asaba during the 2023 teacher’s day celebration, theme “The teachers we need for the education we want”.

The labour chairman, while thanking the state government for taking step to address the issue’s of shortage of teachers across the state, noted the two thousand teachers approved by the governor won’t be enough to address it

He added that teachers in the state are over worked and “teachers are not been trained in the state”

He said, ” I thank the state government for approving that two thousand teachers should be recruited into the primary and secondary schools because there is shortage everywhere, but the two thousand teachers in number are not enough for our teachers, they are over worked”

Our “teachers need training and retraining, they need palliative, they need good modern working tools to teach the children”.

The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, said the government would not stop at employing more teachers but also improve on the welfare of the workforce in the state school system to enhance productivity.

Oborevwori charged teachers in the state to be dedicated to their duties in the upbringing of the children.

Also speaking, the State Head of Service, Mr. Reginald Bayoko assured teachers of the state government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for teachers, adding that the government was continually reviewing their welfare packages, remunerations, and growth opportunities.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the NUT, Comrade Titus Okotie, highlighted some challenges confronting teachers in the state to include delayed promotion, stagnation of University graduate teachers on Grade Level 14, and the delay in granting special palliatives to teachers.

‘’While commending the Oborevwori administration for its prompt response to teachers’ shortage in the state primary education system, I wish to call on the authorities concerned to strictly comply with the statutory procedure of recruitment of professional teachers for the development of our primary education sector.

“It should be reiterated now that the best way of responding to this global imperative to reverse teachers’ shortage in the state is to fill vacancies in our school system without delay. The NUT shall genuinely partner with the state government in this regard for the stability of our education system’’, Comrade Okotie said.
