University of Ibadan trends as students are forced to crowdfund to pay for tuition amid hike

Sep 17, 2024

Different student groups of the University of Ibadan have reached out to the public to crowdfund to pay for their tuition fees following a hike in their fees.

As the September 20 deadline for the payment of school fees approaches, many student groups in the institution went on X (formerly Twitter) to beg for financial assistance amid fears a failure to do so will hinder them from taking their examinations, which starts on Monday, September 23.

The University of Ibadan Student Union (UISU), along with the Faculties of Pharmacy and Nursing, and the Departments of Agronomy, Physiology, and Nutrition Science, have separately solicited funds to help their members pay tuition.

In a memo signed by UISU’s president, Bolaji Aweda, and the Public Relations Officer, Omotayo Olumide, the student union appealed for a sum of 50 million naira to pay for the school fees of 500 students within 4 days, to meet the September 20, 2024 deadline.

Also, the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students, University of Ibadan, in a broadcast tagged “Help UI Pharmacy Students To Stay In School,” published on Monday, September 16, asked the public for 14 million naira to pay for the school fees of 100 students in the faculty.

The association cited the recent increase in school fees and the economic situation as reasons students need help with paying their tuition fees.

Also, Nutrition Science students, Education students, Physiology students, and Agronomy students have also appealed for funds from the public to support the education of students.

Recall that students of UI protested against the hike in school fees approved by the governing council on Thursday, August 29. They asked for a reversal.

However, the management of the institution gave the students a three-week break on Saturday, August 31, instructing them to vacate their halls of residence within six hours following the protest.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have gone on X to react to the situation in the University of Ibadan.
