The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools(ANCOPSS) to remain steadfast in their commitment to providing the highest quality leadership and educational experience for teachers and students.
Oborevwori stated this in Asaba shortly after receiving an award from ANCOPSS during the Mandatory/Continuous Professional Training (MCPT) for South-South zone of the body .
Represented by the State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, also an awardee at the ceremony, said that teachers and students needed mentorship and role modelling from the principals .
While urging the principals to leverage opportunities to learn , grow and network so as to elevate the standard of secondary school in states and Nigeria at large, the Governor enjoined them to continue to support teachers and students irrespective of their challenges.
Oborevwori commended ANCOPSS, South -South zone for the efforts at initiating the training programme to enhance the capacity and professionalism of secondary school principals in the zone .
Earlier in his welcome address, the President of ANCOPSS, Delta State chapter, Sir Christian Ahweyevu said that the training was mandatory tool towards achieving the professional efficiency of principals , adding that the national leadership of the body organized trainings once in a year at the Geo-Political zones .
Ahweyevu stated that the education friendly policies the Governor’s love for staff welfare had taken education sector to its unprecedented level and appreciated the State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu for her role in the upliftment of ANCOPSS, Delta State Chapter.
He noted that the challenges principals faced in effective school management was increasing on daily basis, stressing that it was an attempt to proffer solutions to some of the challenges that their 2024 theme , Optimizing School Leadership; The Impact of Performance Management on Principals’ Continuous Training and Development was apt.
Ahweyevu listed the contributions of Delta State Government towards a better education system to include prompt payment of teachers salaries, payment of accumulated teachers promotion arrears from 2019 till date , approval of five years service extension for teachers and appointment of teachers as Permanent Secretaries among others.
In their goodwill messages, the State Branch Controller of WAEC, Mr. Isaac Igwe and the NECO State Coordinator, Mr. Harry Uhunamure commended ANCOPSS for organizing the training programme aimed at enhancing the leadership skills of the members and impact positively on the area of qualitative and successful assessment of candidates in both WAEC and NECO examinations.
The NECO State Coordinator, particularly stated that they had played pivotal role in revolutionizing secondary education in Nigeria and Africa and disclosed that NECO now conducted its examination in Niger Republic, Togo , Equitorial Guinea, Benin Republic among others countries.
On their part, the National President of ANCOPSS, Muhammad Ibn Musa , who was represented by the National Secretary, Comr. Two Demort Akuben and the South -South Zonal President, Mr. Steve Akpabio, JP said that the programme was rotated the states in the South -South zone to gather, reflect, compare notes and share ideas among themselves on better ways to sustain educational standards and update the managerial skills and knowledge of members.
They appreciated South -South Governors for supporting the states branches of ANCOPSS in carrying out the programme , saying that as principals they needed to acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively and efficiently coordinate students, staff and every activity within their schools.
