Delta State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services and Girl Child Development, Ms. Orode Uduaghan has said her ministry has empowered over seven thousand poor and vulnerable households within two years across the 25 local government areas in Delta.
Orode disclosed this at the State Secretariat, Asaba during an interview to mark Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administratiori’s second year anniversary.
Ms. Orode noted that the ministry’s mandate was specifically to give livelihood support to the poor and vulnerable households across the state.
She explained that the ministry’s mandate does not include every household or to attend to every Deltan but was specifically created and designed for poor and vulnerable households.
According to her; “our mandate specifically is support His Excellency with giving livelihood support to specifically the poor and vulnerable”.
” Our ministry does not attend to every household and to all Deltans. We were specifically created and designed for poor and vulnerable household”.
The Commissioner disclosed that before her assumption in office, the Humanitarian ministry had been doing a lot of empowerment projects, and as well did quite a few projects.
“ When I came on board as well, we have done quite some projects, we launched the MORE GRANT SCHEME, which is a reoccurring project of His Excellency administration. And that MORE GRANT SCHEME was designed to cater for three different sectors of the poor and vulnerable households”.
She explained that, the first in the sector was the Artisans who are from poor and vulnerable household, while the second category in the sector was the petty traders, the women on the street who are randomly selected selling Akara, ugu and pepper and third category was the female entrepreneurs which was marked from the previous administration project GEST.
She said, the administration was able to give grants between 70,000-100,000 to one thousand six hundred persons in petty traders across the 25 local Government areas with a random selection to people who really need the support.
She explained that the money criterion was determined by what they sell, and we rated them based on the category of what they sell.
In the third category, which is the female entrepreneurship, Ms. Orode said, extra effort of training was given to them in the 25-local governments before the grant was given, while revealing that the ministry partnered the Enterprise Development Centre, Lagos, PAN Africa University.
She stated further that the female entrepreneurs were trained on entrepreneurship management, bookkeeping and host of others.
The Commissioner, however, thanked the State Governor for giving her the leverage, the support they needed to help Deltans.
