Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ijomah Ufoh says his ministry is fully committed to ensuring a solid base for the state’s technological advancement for the benefits of all Deltans and residents of the state in line with the MORE agenda of the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Mr. Ufoh stated this in his office while rolling out the achievements of his ministry in the past two years of the present administration.
He stated that Governor Oborevwori in his administration’s MORE agenda had done a lot in the ministry of technical education.
”Recently, we concluded an exercise of supplying 2,500 chairs to technical colleges in the state.”
”The administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori reviewed and revisited the construction of model technical college at Omadino . Then, it was just 40 to 50 percent completion. But today, I can boldly tell you that the project is about 90 to 95 percent complete. ”
According to the Delta State Commissioner, the technical college at Omadino is set for equipping in preparatory for commissioning, and commencement of academic activities in September this year.
”Now, a lot of approvals is ongoing for supply and equipping of the various laboratories, engineering, automobile workshops, fashion and design ,farm implements including ploughs,and provision of furniture for all classes and offices. The school will definitely take off September.”
He revealed that Governor Oborevwori had ordered the review of the contracts for the model technical colleges in Irri, Kiagbodo, Oghareki and Akugbene that are under construction.
”Once the State Executive Council approves the contracts review for the technical colleges, contractors will go back to site, and some of the schools will take off as early as possible. Some will likely commence academic activities same time with that of Omadino if it is possible.”
The Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education said the ministry had secured accreditation of trade courses for the six old technical colleges, and also got accreditation for the commencement of the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) programme in three new model technical colleges.
”The National Skills Qualification that has just been introduced is internationally recognized. So preparation of students for technological advancement and scientific innovations is already done, and the background is set for students to aspire to the greatest heights.”
”The government of Delta State under the leadership of Governor Oborevwori has been paying annually the enrollment fees and all other expenses of the candidates that take the May/June NTC and MBT examinations conducted by the National Board for Technical and Business(NABTEB)
He said the ministry of technical education in collaboration with industry experts had reviewed and updated the curriculum to meet the evolving need of the labour market.
”This proactive approach will equip our graduates with skills and competencies that employers need. ”
While commenting on the success story of the state technical colleges, Mr. Ufoh said the students produce high quality fabricated iron doors that are used by contractors in buildings,
He highlighted other things produced by students of technical colleges to include hospital beds, automated South African brick machines, furniture, bread, cake, and meat pie following the approval of production units in all technical colleges by Governor Oborevwori.
