Activities were disrupted at the Delta State Civil Service Secretariat in Asaba following a protest by workers over the reported death of a director who was allegedly assaulted by the Commissioner for Basic Education, Mr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, and some of his aides.
The incident reportedly created tension at the Secretariat, with workers withdrawing their services in protest and demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the director’s death.
Addressing journalists during the protest, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, condemned the alleged assault and called for a thorough investigation.
Ofobruku said the matter would be fully investigated and that anyone found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He also announced that an emergency meeting of all affiliate unions would be convened, adding that work would remain suspended pending further directives.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, assured workers and the public that no stone would be left unturned in establishing the facts surrounding the incident.
Aniagwu said Governor Sheriff Francis Oborevwori would ensure that justice was served, adding that the state government would allow the appropriate authorities to investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, the Area Commander, Asaba, ACP Alex Udeze, said the police were invited following the unrest at the Secretariat.
He said the police responded promptly to maintain law and order and prevent the situation from escalating.
The alleged assault and the circumstances surrounding the director’s death remain subject to investigation.
