Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has awarded a N50 million scholarship to Miss Davina Ogheneovo, a Junior Technical Two student of Model Technical College, Oghareki, in Ethiope West Local Government Area, in recognition of her confidence and eloquence during the inauguration of the institution.
The governor fulfilled the promise on Monday when he received Davina, her mother, the school principal, the chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, the Commissioner for Technical Education and other dignitaries at Government House, Asaba.
Davina had impressed the governor with her extempore speech at the inauguration of the college last Friday, prompting him to pledge N50 million to support her education.
Oborevwori said the scholarship reflected his administration’s commitment to promoting education, rewarding excellence and investing in the future of young people.
He noted that education remained one of the most enduring legacies anyone could acquire, adding that his administration had consistently recognised and rewarded outstanding academic achievements.
The governor recalled that Delta students who emerged world champions at the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, received N20 million each. He also cited the state government’s recognition of exceptional university graduates.
According to him, Davina’s composure and ability to deliver her speech despite attempts to distract her demonstrated the qualities deserving of encouragement and support.
“Education remains with you for life. You may acquire wealth and other things, but education is the best legacy you can give your children,” he said.
The governor directed that the scholarship funds be paid into a dedicated account managed by Davina’s parents exclusively for her education. He added that she would take control of the account upon attaining the age of 18.
He assured the student and her family that the scholarship would cover her education through technical college and university, thereby reducing the financial burden on her parents.
Oborevwori also recalled an earlier intervention in which he rescued an abused boy and awarded him a scholarship. He disclosed that the boy had completed secondary education and was currently studying at university, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable children.
In her remarks, Davina, who aspires to become a medical doctor, expressed gratitude to the governor for the scholarship and commended his administration for providing modern facilities at the college.
She pledged to remain committed to her studies and work hard to justify the confidence placed in her.
Her mother, Mrs Berkeley Ogheneovo, described the scholarship as an unexpected gesture that would significantly support her daughter’s educational journey through university.
She explained that her decision to enrol Davina at the technical college was informed by her belief in technical education and its capacity to equip young people with practical skills for the future.
The Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr Smart Ufoh, said the scholarship demonstrated the state government’s determination to advance education and support promising students.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Hon. Christian Onogba, commended the governor for establishing the college in the area, noting that the institution would provide young people with technical skills to promote self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
Onogba pledged the council’s support in safeguarding the school’s infrastructure and urged residents to take ownership of the institution by protecting its facilities and ensuring their proper maintenance.
