Former Senator, Elisha Abbo has said that senators currently earn N29 million monthly but it is not a lot of money.

He made the statement while appearing on Arise Television to discuss the controversy surrounding lawmakers’ salaries and allowances.

Abbo explained that when he was a senator, his salary was a little over one million naira but he took home N14.4 million monthly, including allowances.

However,  he said it was not a lot of money, considering that he made more money from his business.

Asked about what senators currently earn, he said they earn N29million monthly, including their allowances but that the amount is not huge.

He said: “29 million looks big just on paper.  I am saying this as a very honest man.”

He added that the National Assembly “is an institution so vilified and I have been a member of that vilified institution for five years.”

He reiterated that the monthly salary and allowances of senators is not too much.

“It is not humongous,” he said when the host referred to the N29million monthly pay that senators receive amid economic hardship in Nigeria.
