The Executive Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government, Hon (Barr) C.S Possible Ajede, today received a UN GEWE Champion Award as he flagged off the 16 Days Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence while noting that, “No one is free until we are all free.”
In his address at the event organized by the United Nations GEWE (Gender Equality and Women Empowerment) Coordination Mechanism Platform, Delta State, to commemorate the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, held at the Ukwuani Council Secretariat, Barr. Ajede applauded the GEWE coordinators for their leadership in the campaign against violence toward women and girls.
During the flag-off, Barr. Ajede noted that “harmful activities carried out against an individual based on the person’s gender, as well as physical, psychological, emotional, and sexual abuse, forced marriage, and child trafficking, are all violent acts.”
The Ukwuani Council Boss, represented at the event by the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Mr. Osondu Chukunomnazu, also emphasized the need for all stakeholders to unite in the fight against gender-based violence in any guise.
Speaking further, the Council Boss noted that gender-based violence is a serious problem in the society today. He therefore called on the leadership of GEWE, women’s groups, unions, CSOs, and other critical stakeholders to unite and intensify the campaign against gender-based violence at home, in schools, workplaces, and even on the streets.
In his passionate appeal for concerted efforts in the fight against gender-based violence, Barr. Ajede stated that, “No one is free until we are all free.”
Meanwhile, the campaign against gender-based violence will run from today, December 3rd, to December 18th, 2024, across the LGA and will be championed by CSOs and other women’s organizations in collaboration with the Ukwuani Local Government Council.
