The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has pledged to run an issue-based campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging political actors to shun violence, inflammatory statements and actions capable of threatening the prevailing peace in the state.
Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Delta State APC Campaign Council, Mr Charles Aniagwu, gave the assurance on Monday while unveiling members of the committee to journalists in Asaba.
He named other members of the committee as Mr Valentine Onojeguo, Vice Chairman; Hon. Timi Tonye, Secretary; Olorogun Festus Ahon, Sir Kelly Okolugbo and Mr Jackson Ekwugum, all members.
Aniagwu said the party would focus on the performance of President Bola Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, as well as their policies, programmes and achievements.
He said the committee would work closely with journalists to ensure that the electorate received accurate information about the party’s candidates and their programmes ahead of the elections.
According to him, the committee’s responsibilities extend beyond the president and the governor to include all APC candidates contesting seats in the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate.
“We will stay with the issues,” Aniagwu said, urging journalists to partner with the committee in communicating the party’s message to the electorate.
He explained that the campaign would focus on governance and issues affecting the welfare of the people, adding that the committee had the experience to respond to questions and provide relevant information about the candidates and their policies.
The APC campaign spokesman, however, cautioned political actors against making statements capable of inciting violence, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could encourage supporters to take the law into their own hands.
He stressed that the state government would not tolerate violence, irrespective of the political affiliation or background of those involved.
“The governor has warned earlier that nobody is above the law. We will not tolerate violence, irrespective of the divide anybody belongs to,” he said.
Aniagwu also declared that the APC would not engage in electoral malpractice, expressing confidence that the performance of the Tinubu and Oborevwori administrations would provide the party with a strong basis to seek re-election.
“We will not get involved in rigging elections. We will show our report card,” he said.
He maintained that the party believed voters would assess its candidates based on their records, policies and achievements, urging political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint in their public statements as the electioneering season approaches.
Warning against remarks that could provoke attacks or encourage reprisals at polling units, Aniagwu urged residents to report suspected electoral offences to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence.
“We are not in a jungle republic. If there is anybody carrying out an action you consider not to be in line with the electoral guidelines, that is why we have the security agencies. Report them and let the law take its course,” he said.
He described calls for jungle justice as inimical to the peace and stability of Delta State, urging residents not to be swayed by statements capable of turning political disagreements into violent confrontations.
Aniagwu said the APC would remain focused on explaining the policies and reforms of the federal and state governments, expressing optimism that the programmes would contribute to a better future for Deltans.
He reiterated the party’s commitment to issue-based political engagement, stressing the need for peaceful participation, respect for the rule of law and constructive discussions on governance as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
