It was a historic moment on Monday, July 6, 2026 as writers under the auspices of South South Writers Forum (SOSOWFO) paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro, Delta State.
Earlier in his address, the President of the group Chief Alaska Ekele thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof Sunny Awhefeada for hosting the Association. He said it was incumbent on the writers body to identify with the VC whom they consider as a critical stakeholder in the literary, media, culture and communication world in Delta State, the South South geopolitical zone and Nigeria. He stated that, “We cannot float such a professional body as South South Writers Forum (SOSOWFO) without the likes of Prof Sunny Awhefeada in the picture. Anything short of that is considered out of place.”
He pledged the loyalty and support of South South Writers Forum for Southern Delta University (SDU) and for fruitful collaboration between the Association and the University.
The President of the group hinted that the body is duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) since 2024, stressing that they have three categories of membership – Student, Associate, Full members and that membership cuts across all fields of endeavours and is open to all writers, journalists, literary people, critics, professionals, cultural enthusiasts, educationalists and interested members of the public in the South South geopolitical region of Nigeria.
He went further to say that Prof Sunny Awhefeada has been appointed as one of the Patrons of the Association and that the official investiture ceremony will take place in due course.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor of Southern Delta University (SDU) Prof Sunny Awhefeada thanked the members of the writers body for the initiative of coming together under one fold. He observed that, “what we in the creative and media industry owe this group is our unflinching support to give it a pride of place and fame in the south south geopolitical zone.” He appreciated the fact that South South Writers Forum (SOSOWFO) was ready to collaborate with Southern Delta University, stressing that it was a welcome development. What he considered as the greatest in the setting of the writers body was the fact that they have students as members who would take over the writing profession in future and also learn useful skills from the older generation.
Prof Awhefeada said he was ready to work with South South Writers Forum in any capacity and thanked the members for finding him worthy of being a Patron of the Association. He said his door is open for the Forum at all times.
Much as it was an interactive session, the University demonstrated her hospitality that she is already known for and the writers all went home satisfied that the Delta State Government did the right thing by appointing the right man for the job.The writers delegation consisted of leaders of the Association, Board of Trustees members, tertiary students and key stakeholders in the writing field in the South South region.
