The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 56-year-old man, Lucky Oyiboka, and recovered 21 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp during an intelligence-led raid in Owa-Abbi, Ukwani Local Government Area of the state.
The operation was carried out on Saturday, August 8, by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), following credible intelligence on activities allegedly linked to the distribution of illicit drugs.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the operatives raided a suspected criminal hideout in Owa-Abbi and arrested Oyiboka during the operation.
A search of the premises subsequently led to the recovery of 21 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
Preliminary investigation, the police said, indicated that the suspect was allegedly involved in the distribution of illicit drugs.
“The investigation has been intensified to determine the extent of the illicit drug network and identify other persons connected to the operation,” the statement said.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained operations against criminal networks and the proliferation of illicit drugs in the state.
The police also appealed to members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information that could assist in combating crime, assuring that the identities of informants would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
The operation is part of the Delta State Police Command’s ongoing efforts in furtherance of the crime-fighting initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
