The Delta State Government has terminated three major contracts awarded by the previous administration over poor performance and delays in execution.
The decision was taken at the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held on Monday, August 31, 2026, following recommendations from the State Tenders Board.
Speaking at a post-Exco briefing, the Commissioner for Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the government would no longer tolerate situations where public funds were committed to projects that failed to progress at an acceptable pace.
Aniagwu, who addressed journalists alongside the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, said the affected contracts had recorded unsatisfactory levels of execution.
Among the projects terminated are the Okerenkoko Township Road, the Adjei Street and School Road interlocking-stone project at a new layout in Warri South Local Government Area, and the permanent office complex of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC).
The commissioner explained that terminating the contracts would allow the government to commence fresh procurement processes and engage contractors with the technical and financial capacity to deliver the projects within reasonable timelines.
He stressed that the move was part of the administration’s broader commitment to ensuring accountability, value for money and effective utilisation of public resources.
The cancellations are likely to spark reactions, particularly from stakeholders and contractors connected to the affected projects, as the state government moves to provide further details on the decision.
The administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has repeatedly stated that projects must be delivered efficiently and that government resources must be managed prudently.
