The Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) has denied allegations that its leadership is pursuing a plan to rename or impose an identity on the Ukwuani people.
The NNU President, Comrade Amechi Asugwuni, made the clarification on Thursday at a press conference held at Ndokwa House, Kwale, describing the reports as misleading.
Asugwuni also denied allegations that he engaged thugs to harass members of the Ukwuani Descendants Union (UDU) who attended a town hall meeting in Kwale.
He said the name, Ndokwa Neku Union, was inherited from previous leadership and that he would continue to operate under the name in line with the constitution of the organisation.
On calls or moves to alter the names of the local government areas within the Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, Asugwuni said such changes could only be effected through due process and with the requisite legal recognition.
He urged stakeholders in the Ndokwa and Ukwuani communities to avoid issues capable of deepening divisions, stressing the need to focus on development, unity and the collective interests of the people.
The NNU President General said no individual or group was “more Ukwuani or Ndosumili” than another, adding that the identity of the people was already established and did not require imposition or forceful assertion.
Asugwuni called on stakeholders to channel their energies towards community development and accountability among political and community leaders.
He further urged the people of Ndosumili and Ukwuani to work together to promote peace, unity and sustainable development across the communities.
