The Delta State Police Command has arrested one person over the death of Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education.
Adeda died following an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba.
The police said complaints received by the command alleged that Adeda was beaten by three aides to the commissioner — Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh.
Lucky Adoh has been arrested, while the police said a manhunt is underway for the other two suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, has directed the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and Adeda’s death.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, investigators will examine video footage, eyewitness accounts, medical records and other available evidence.
The command said the investigation would cover the actions of all persons connected with the incident and determine whether anyone is culpable.
Erale assured the deceased’s family and the public that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of status or position.
He also urged the public to remain calm and refrain from drawing conclusions until the investigation establishes the facts.
The police commissioner expressed condolences to Adeda’s family and pledged that the investigation would be conducted professionally and without interference.
